Christians in central Myanmar were barred to celebrate pre-Christmas prayer following the Buddhist villagers complained about the plan, the latest incident that shows rise of religious intolerance among country’s Buddhist majority.

In December 9th notice letter sent to U Kyaw Myint from administrator of Kan Thar village tract, Gangaw Township, Magway Division states that ‘I have decided to ban pre-Christmas prayer that is scheduled to take place at the house of U Kyaw Myint and Daw Aye Khine after receiving a complaint from villagers that they are worried the celebration could cause potential religious conflict in the village’.

Although country’s constitution guarantees religious freedom of all citizens, Myanmar government officials are reluctant to protect basic rights of religious minorities.
